A friend with a startup was talking to a major American TV news show about them doing a segment on his app. After a bit of back and forth about the story, they got back with their response:
“We don’t want stories about apps anymore – apps are over.”
So apps are officially over – at least as a story for news media.
Of course they’re still totally essential for any company, startup or otherwise, hoping to capture whatever their particular market is and connect with their own particular audience. More than ever.
But you aren’t going to get any press on how cool your app is. Those days are over.
Nowadays if you want to land a spot in major media your story has got to be about much more than just the app. It has to be about the people whose lives you’re changing. (Or it could also be about how your company just got valued at whatever-hundred-million dollars.)
The app is no longer *the* story, it’s now just another part of the story, the backdrop to it.
Which is actually where it should have been all along I think.
